Step into it

May 26, 2020

Everything we experience is imaginary, not because it isn’t real, but because we cannot experience the realness. Everything we experience must be imaginary, if for no other reason (there are many) than the time lag, small as it may be, between sensory input and cognitive response. There is no such thing as zero latency.

We thus must imagine the past, the “present,” the future; all of it.

So why not then go whole hog, as it were. Imagine a person on the face of emptiness, as the king stamps his likeness on the coin of the realm. Zeus on Mount Olympus, Jesus fresh out of the tomb, Lucy in the sky with diamonds.

It’s all good, like everything else; perhaps even useful, just as long as you don’t take it too seriously.

“When the soul wants to have an experience,” said Meister Eckhart, “She throws out an image before her and steps into it.”

Go ahead, step into it.
